U.Uakaris are small South American primates with striking bald heads and bright red faces.
(They may be attractive to mates because malarial or sick animals develop pale faces.) They
have a long, shaggy coat that varies from reddish brown to orange. These monkeys live only
in the Amazon River basin, preferring permanently or seasonally flooded rain forests and
locations near water sources, such as small rivers and lakes.
V.Like other vultures, the king vulture is a scavenger. These large birds glide on air currents,
conserving energy while searching the forests or savanna below for the corpses of dead
animals. Because of their unappetizing eating habits, they fill an ecological niche, and may
help to prevent the spread of disease by disposing of rotting remains.
W.The ungainly gnu earned the Afrikaans name wildebeest, or "wild beast," for the
menacing appearance presented by its large head, shaggy mane, pointed beard, and sharp,
curved horns. In fact, the wildebeest is better described as a reliable source of food for the
truly menacing predators of the African savanna: lions, cheetahs, wild dogs, and hyenas.
X.Xiphactinus was one of the largest bony fish of the Late Cretaceous and is considered
one of the fiercest creatures in the sea. A powerful tail and winglike pectoral fins shot the
17-foot-long (5-meter-long) monster through the surface waters of the ocean. Unlucky fish
and unsuspecting seabirds were snared inside Xiphactinus's upturned jaw, which was lined
with giant, fanglike teeth, giving it an expression akin to that of a bulldog.
Y. Yaks mate in about September; the females may first conceive at about 3-4 years of age,
calving April to June about every other or every third year, apparently depending upon food
supply. This gestation period is approximately 9 months. In the absence of more data, wild
animals are assumed to mirror this reproductive behavior. Calves will be weaned at one year
and become independent shortly thereafter. Yaks may live to somewhat more than 20 years.
Z.Why do zebras have stripes at all? Scientists aren't sure, but many theories center on
their utility as some form of camouflage. The patterns may make it difficult for predators to
identify a single animal from a running herd and distort distance at dawn and dusk. Or they
may dissuade insects that recognize only large areas of single-colored fur or act as a kind of
natural sunscreen. Because of their uniqueness, stripes may also help zebras recognize
one another.
